Project description
The project introduces an augmented reality–based welding training model that enhances traditional vocational education by improving efficiency, safety, and learning outcomes. Implemented at Jiangsu Maritime Institute, the approach integrates the Seabery Augmented Welding Training System directly into the Welding curriculum, combining simulation and hands-on practice as complementary stages within the same structured learning pathway. Using AR simulation, students can practice core welding techniques in a fully virtual environment that replicates arc behaviour, torch movement, and weld pool dynamics without consuming materials or exposing learners to physical risks. The system provides real-time visual feedback on key parameters such as angle, distance, and travel speed, allowing learners to immediately understand and correct their technique. Instructors also benefit from enhanced visibility of student performance, with the ability to review exercises, identify errors, and deliver more precise, data-driven guidance. By embedding simulation directly into the training pathway, the project increases the number of practice repetitions per student while reducing reliance on consumables and workshop time. Evidence from a controlled study in a comparable vocational context shows significant reductions in training time and costs, alongside increased practice volume without compromising final qualification outcomes. The project serves vocational institutions seeking scalable, cost-effective solutions to address skills shortages, improve training quality, and modernize technical education through structured integration of digital tools.
