Practical ability is demonstrated by doing and explaining, but assessing it often depends on a skilled assessor being present, which limits reach, consistency, and access. AkoVoice is an open voice-based system for learning and assessment that addresses this. Spoken assessment also reveals a learner’s reasoning that written formats can miss.
AkoVoice captures spoken evidence of competence on a phone, in the learner’s own words, and maps it to rubric criteria that institutions align to recognized qualification standards. The assessor reviews the learner’s evidence with extracts aligned to the rubric, and confirms or revises the outcome. Rubrics are configured to each institution’s standards, so the system adapts without rebuilding. It is designed for multilingual delivery and for use in low-connectivity areas or where broadband is unreliable. AkoVoice is in active use with English, and has been tested with Korean and Mandarin on the same pipeline. Research deployment includes student and teacher testing in selected trade and service courses during 2026. AkoVoice is released under open licences, so any provider or partner can self-deploy and configure it to their own requirements.
